Aldergrove Secondary’s (ACSS) Junior Varsity boys opened up their 2017-18 basketball season with a 39-43 overtime loss to Langley Secondary in exhibition action Monday, Nov. 27 at Aldergrove Community Secondary School.
In front of a great, loud crowd the two teams went back and forth to the final buzzer and if that wasn’t enough the game had to be finished after an extra bonus overtime quarter.
ACSS came out of the gates flying in the first half, led by grade 9 players Satvir Singh (13 points and eight rebounds) and U’Shaun Campbell (11 points, five rebounds and six assists). The team was flowing and having their way on the offensive end of the floor.
Their team defence suffocated the LSS offence and didn’t let them get comfortable on the offensive side of the court. ACSS was able to force numerous steals and defensive deflections by putting pressure on the LSS players and constantly running them up and down the court.
ACSS found themselves up up 25-10 at half.
The second half was completely the opposite of the first half. LSS came out flying and left everything out on the floor.
ACSS grade 10 players Michael Adam (seven points and three assists) and Jessiah Lomas (four points, two rebounds and block) helped ACSS hold on to their lead heading into the fourth quarter, 37 to 23.
The fourth quarter was a flurry of back and forth action that saw both teams exchange the lead all quarter long. It came down to a huge basket from Singh with 10 seconds left, to tie the game, 39-39.
A foul at the final whistle against ACSS saw LSS have a chance to win the game with 0.0 left on the clock to win the game. The Aldergrove crowd got on their feet, made noise and used the home court advantage to make LSS miss the free throws and to force overtime.
The fourth quarter saw LSS out score ACSS 16 to 12.
End of the fourth quarter saw 39-39 on the scoreboard and both teams re-huddled to get ready for overtime.
ACSS struggled to hit their free throws in the overtime period and LSS took advantage, out-scoring their opponent 4-0 to earn the hard fought 39-43 victory.
