Six victories in a row — including a weekend sweep of the third-ranked Alberta Pandas — has the Trinity Western Spartan women’s volleyball team in the U Sports top 10 for the first time this season.
The Spartans won 3-1 and 3-2 over the weekend at the Langley Events Centre as they improved to 7-3.
“It was a battle. We knew Alberta was going to make adjustments and we had to adjust back as the game went on,” said TWU coach Ryan Hofer.
“It took a little longer than I had hoped, but by the end, the girls did what they needed to do and they played very well in the fifth set.”
The Spartans won the first and third sets by scores of 25-16 and 26-24 while Alberta took set two and four (25-23 and 25-21).
The fifth set was 15-9.
Hilary Howe led TWU with a career-high 20 kills while Linda Damerau had 11 kills. Brie O’Reilly also had a huge game with a career-high 44 assists to go along with 17 digs while Avery Heppell had 10 blocks and five kills.
Friday’s match again saw the team split the first two sets 26-24 TWU and 25-20 for Alberta. But the Spartans won 25-21 and 25-17 to take the game.
