Kodiaks douse Flames in opening round series

Aldergrove moves on to second round playoff series against Abbotsford

It took a bit longer than expected, but the Aldergrove Kodiaks finally extinguished the Ridge Meadows Flames.

The Kodiaks scored a 2-1 victory in game six of their opening round junior B playoff series on Thursday night at Maple Ridge's Planet Ice.

Daniel Higgs snapped the 1-1 with an unassisted third-period goal with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The Flames' Sean Pesut and Aldergrove's Brandon Potomak had traded first period power play goals.

Ross Baadsvik made 26 saves for the victory.

The Flames had stayed alive after a 4-2 win the previous night at the Aldergrove Arena.

During the regular season, Aldergrove won the PIJHL's Harold Brittain Conference with 59 points, while Ridge Meadows qualified with just 23 points.

Aldergrove now plays the second-place Abbotsford Pilots in a best-of-seven series to see which team plays in the PIJHL finals.

The Kodiaks have home-ice advantage after edging the Pilots by one point during the regular season.

The series kicks off on March 12 (Monday) at the Aldergrove Arena.
