Kodiaks down Sockeyes, Hawks

The Aldergrove Kodiaks won both of their games at the Winter Classic in Richmond to start the new year with a league-leading 54 points after 33 games.

The Jan. 1 win was 5-4 in overtime over the Richmond Sockeyes, followed by the Jan. 2 win over the Delta Ice Hawks, 5-2.

Aldergrove Kodiak Ty Pickering scored at 3:52 of overtime to give the Kodiaks a 5-4 win over the Richmond Sockeyes in the Friday night nightcap of the Winter Classic series at Richmond Arena.

Kodiak Kyle Bosko sent the game into the extra frame when he scored with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation time.

The game had seesawed with Aldergrove taking the 2-1 lead in the first, the Sockeyes coming back for a 3-2 lead in the second, and a 4-4 tie at the end of the third.

Kodiak Cameron Davitt scored twice for the Kodiaks and added an assist. Davitt opened the scoring at 35 seconds into the first period, assisted by Sam Bodnaruk, followed by a power play goal by Elijah Vilio, assisted by Kyle Bosko and Matt Oliver.

The Sockeyes scored the next three goals until Davitt scored short-handed and unassisted early in the third period, to tie it 3-3.

The Sockeyes scored again at 18:57, followed by Bosko at 19:38 (assisted by Eric Callegari and Davin Padgham), to take it into overtime.

Pickering’s winning goal was assisted by Callegari and Davitt.

Aldergrove outshot the Sockeyes 35-30 and scored on one of six power plays while the Sockeyes came up short on seven power plays.

Aldergrove also outshot the Ice Hawks 36-28 Jan. 2 for the 5-2 win. Scoring for Aldergrove were Quinncy Leroux, Davin Padgham, Eric Callegari on power play, and a pair for Derian White. Assists came from Vilio, Callegari (3), Jacob De Waal, Davitt, Arjan Cheema, Leroux, and Bosko.

Callegari is the league leader with 57 points this season, while fellow Kodiak Davitt is third in the league with 51 points.

Aldergrove Kodiaks will host the North Vancouver Wolf Pack at their first home game of the new year, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 7:15 p.m. at Aldergrove Arena.
