Trinity Western University will have three athletes representing Canada in Taiwan this summer.
Track and field stars Regan Yee, Nathan George, and James Linde will all be participating in the biennial 2017 Summer Universiade FISU (Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire) from Aug. 19 to 30. The track and field events are scheduled to run from Aug. 23 to 28.
Yee, who will enter her fifth year as a Spartan this fall, will compete in the 1500m.
Meanwhile, George – who graduated this past spring – will race in the 400m.
Linde, who also graduated this year, will run in both the 100m and 200m.
For Yee, this will be her second chance to don the Maple Leaf at the Summer Universiade, as she competed in the 3000m steeplechase in 2015 in Gwangju, South Korea, finishing seventh overall.
Most recently, Yee finished sixth in the 1500m at the 2017 Canadian track and field championships with a time of 4:15.73. She has a 1500m personal best of 4:09.29, which she ran earlier this year in a race in Portland, Ore.
Both Linde and George will be competing in the Summer Universiade for the first time, with both looking to build off already strong summer performances.
Linde has had season to remember, as he is coming off a fourth-place finish in the 200m at the Canadian championships, posting a wind-aided 20.64 in the final. He also finished 10th in the 100m at the national meet with a time of 10.45. Officially, he has a personal best of 20.72 in the 200m and 10.42 in the 100m, both of which he ran this summer.
George is coming off his second straight podium finish in the 400m at the Canadian championships. The 400m specialist captured the Canadian title last year, before finishing second this year. George has a 400m personal record of 45.94, which he ran at last year’s national championships.
Athletics Canada named the 51 athletes who will represent Canada at the Summer Universiade last week.
The top two university athletes in each discipline who make the FISU standard, including those who graduated this past spring, earn the right to compete in the Summer Universiade.
