Twisters gymnasts are ‘champions’

Twisters athletes again proved their skill and talent during the BC Gymnastics Championships last weekend.

Twisters athletes again proved their skill and talent during the BC Gymnastics Championships last weekend. They brought home lots of medals and made their supporters proud to have such an excellent gymnastics club in the valley. The Twisters Women’s National Open Team won second place in the championships.

Twisters' Provincial Champions are:

• Steven Chaplin from Mission: National Youth

• Carissa Williams from Aldergrove: Provincial Level 4 Novice

• Jeremy Gaspar from Mission: Provincial Level 3 (over 13)

Also, congratulations to the athletes who qualified for the Western Canadian Championships, held in Langley in May, and the National Championships, held in Regina in May.

Five Twisters athletes qualified for both:

• Andry and Dawson Friesen from Abbotsford

• Cohen Kiers from Abbotsford

• Marquita Morison from Chilliwack

• Steven Chaplin from Mission

Also, Kyle Machibroda-Ames and Aidan Daniell from Langley qualified for Westerns. Ken Ikeda and Nicolas Garfias from Abbotsford and Zachary Clay from Chilliwack qualified for Nationals.

The women compete in four disciplines:  floor, vault, beam, uneven bars.  The men compete in six disciplines:  pommel horse, high bar, rings, vault, floor, parallel bars.  Both men and women also get an all-around score. The Level 1 athletes on the men’s side get gold, silver, or bronze in all disciplines.

Also, the younger members of the Twisters Women’s team had lots to celebrate at the Christy Fraser Memorial Invitational, which took place in Langley on March 31.

From Langley and Aldergrove

• Paula Melger-Ida, Prov. Level 2 Tyro:  tie for bronze on beam; tie fro bronze on floor; tie for 12th all-around

• Carissa Williams, Prov. Level 4 Novice:  provincial champion on beam; bronze on vault; all-around provincial champion

• Aiden Daniell, Naional Youth:  4th on high bar, 7th on floor, 8th on pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars; 8th all-around

• Kayle Machibroda, National Open:  silver on rings and parallel bars; bronze on high bar; bronze all-around

• Jonathan Osers, Senior:  silver on floor, bronze on vault, 5th all-around.
