Volunteers needed for B.C. Seniors Games

Games will be held in Langley Sept. 9 to 13

With close to 4,000 athletes expected to attend the B.C. Seniors Games this September in Langley, the call is going out for volunteers to give a helping hand.

And the Games’ organizing committee is confident the community will come through.

“We are in need of between 1,500 and 1,800 volunteers,” said Milt Kruger, the president of the B.C. Senior Games.

“Opportunities exist for helping with any of the 25 sports in addition to the support areas.”

The games run Sept. 9 to 13.

There is an urgent need for volunteer sport chairs for table tennis, whist, cribbage and carpet bowling. These volunteers will be responsible for co-ordinating the schedule of competition and overseeing the venue for the week of the competition.

“Local athletes and teams are a great source for officials, helping setting up for competitions or equipment management,” said Games vice-president Michael Jackstien. “Similarly, because the Games will take place early in the month, it’s hoped that students looking for volunteer hours will consider registering for a shift or two of experience.”

Volunteers with a background and interest in photography as well as website and social media updating are also needed.

To register, either drop by the Games’ office (101-20560 Fraser Hwy.) Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., go online at www.bcgames.net/lng2014.se or email volunteer@2014bcsg.com.
