A comeback wasn’t in the cards for a Langley-based lacrosse team who were in Alberta this weekend for play.

The Vancouver Stealth, now 0-2 in the new season, ultimately fell 15-12 to their western rivals – the Calgary Roughnecks – at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night.

Both teams had difficulties with their offence in the first week, said Stealth’s head coach and assistant general manager Jamie Batley. But early action insured that would not be the case in week two.

Calgary opened the first quarter with five of the first six goals of the game, finishing the opening frame 6-4.

The teams swapped a pair of goals in the second, while the Roughnecks had another six-goal performance in the third.

The Stealth rallied in the fourth outscoring Calgary 3-1 in the final 15 minutes, but ultimately finished on the wrong end of the scoresheet, Batley said.

“We are 0-2, we have 16 games left and we need to starting winning, but we are not pushing the panic button,” he said.

“We need to get better shooting percentages and we need more goals from some of our guys and they know that.”

Corey Small had five assists while Rhys Duch scored his first goal of the season and added three assists.

Ryan Fournier notched the first goal of his NLL career, breaking up a Calgary run of two goals in 11 seconds.

Brandon Clelland played the best game of his pro-career, adding two goals and two assists.

Meanwhile, Logan Schuss tallied a hat trick in the first quarter and finished the night with five goals on eight shots, and had three helpers.

“It is great to get the nice feeds from all the guys on the floor. When I have those opportunities, I need to put the ball in the net and we should have a good chance to win,” said Schuss, the Stealth’s assistant captain.

“It was the little things that got away from us tonight, we need to tighten that up. We have a bye-week, so we are going to focus on our conditioning, stay in shape and look to come out of New England with a big win.”

Vancouver will have a bye in week three, but return in the fourth week of action, when they visit the New England Blackwolves on Friday, Dec. 29.

Then, the Stealth return home on Jan. 6, in a west-vs-east match up against the Toronto Rock.

Tickets to the next home game are still available, including single-game tickets, stocking stuffer two-game flex packs, and Boston Pizza holiday packs (featuring four tickets, one large pizza, four soft drinks, and a cactus cut appetizer for $99).
