Rotarians and volunteers are packing 50 backpacks with food for Aldergrove elementary school students to take home with them every weekend this school year.

On November 28, the Aldergrove Rotary Club’s Starfish Pasta Party celebrated the generosity of local individuals and businesses who have supported the Aldergrove Starfish Backpack Program.

The Starfish pasta party was held in the sold-out Aldergrove Legion hall.

Thanks to community donations, the Aldergrove Starfish Backpack Program is able to provide food for 50 hungry kids at three local schools. The 50 youths at Parkside Elementary, Shortreed Elementary and Betty Gilbert Middle schools are receiving backpacks of weekend food for the current September-to-June school year.

At the Pasta Party over 100 people paid $20 each for a delicious Italian meal that was generously provided and prepared by Carlo Bonetti, owner of Bonetti Meats.

Along with even more individual donations, the silent and live auction activities added to the evening’s proceeds — and fun. At time of writing, the income from the pasta party is $6,000, and climbing.

The evening's proceeds will be used to support hungry kids with Starfish backpacks during the next school year, 2016-2017.

The cost to provide a Starfish Backpack full of weekend food for one child for one school year is $525.
