Langley societies partner for Palliative Care Week

Hospice and seniors societies hosting several events May 5 to 11

Langley Hospice Society and Langley Senior Resources Society are partnering to host several events for Palliative Care Week, which occurs May 5 to 11.

Each workshop will be hosted at the senior centre, while being facilitated by members of Langley hospice.

The topics chosen were based on feedback from programs Langley hospice offers regularly, explained Shannon Todd-Booth, executive director.

“We’re trying to help folks understand that there is support available if they need or want it, and often in our families, networks, and broader community we can all play a role in holding space for each other during these challenging times,” she said.

She added that these types of partnerships and events are about increasing awareness and creating opportunities to start important conversations with loved ones.

“We reached out to Kate Ludlam and her team and they said yes. LSRS is a close neighbour and has unique space for these types of offerings, and the content is relevant for many of their members,” Todd-Booth commented.

Below is a list of the workshops:

- Monday, May 6

An introduction to Langley Hospice by Shannon Todd-Booth from 10 to 11 a.m.

- Tuesday, May 7

A workshop on how to support a friend or family member who has experienced the loss of a loved one from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. by Stephannie Rosencrans, adult bereavement coordinator.

- Thursday, May 9

Tips and tricks for caregivers on how to look after themselves and each other from 1 to 2:30 p.m. by Graeme Beamiss, adult bereavement outreach and peer support worker.

On the same day but at Langley hospice (20660 48th Ave.), a workshop on advanced care planning for future healthcare wishes from 6 to 9:30 p.m. by Angela Elemans, palliative support coordinator. This same workshop will be held again on June 4 at the senior society.

All events are free but space is limited, so people are asked to register in advance by emailing info@langleyhospice.ca.

LSRS is located at 20605 51b Ave.
