A country roots band is coming to the stage of a Langley venue.

On Friday, May 19, Vancouver-based band, The Matinee, will perform its new album full heart-felt and honest lyrics, “SHAKE IT.”

The show starts at 8 p.m. at the Bez Arts Hub in Willoughby.

Matt Rose, guitarist who also plays banjo and occasionally sings, formed the band with his high school friends after graduation.

The band calls their music “roots rock.”

“It’s like folk-rock. It’s not pop music or hard rock,” he said.

The band has played across North America for more than 15 years.

“We’ve played in Langley before, a few years before COVID, and it was a lot of fun,” Rose said.

They’re hoping to make a comeback this year after the pandemic, which affected musicians’ ability to perform for live audiences.

Rose said he’s found their style of music to appeal most often to crowds in southern U.S. states, so they perform there often.

“We are looking forward to performing at Bez.”

The band will also be on tour this summer.

Bez has cancelled the May 20 show by Coco Jafro.

Russ Rosen, co-founder and artistic director at Bez, said the events are open to everyone and are a great opportunity to celebrate music.

As curator and presenter of the Bez concert series, Rosen teaches song creation and performance through weekly open mic nights.

“It’s a really supportive environment, everybody’s here for each other to share their songs,” he said.

Open mic nights with Rosen are every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. until June 22.

Bez is located at 20230 64th Ave. Tickets are available at bezartshub.com.
