Twenty-one businesses and individuals have been nominated this year for the 2012 Langley Environmental Hero Award, initiated by MP Mark Warawa. The awards will be presented on Saturday, June 9 at the National Historic Site in Fort Langley, at 11 a.m.
There are three categories: Individual, Business and Organization, and Youth. As part of the fort’s effort to regenerate its orchard, the award ceremony will include the winners planting a heritage apple tree.
The public is invited to attend.
The Langley Environmental Hero Award began in 2006 as a way to acknowledge Langley’s grassroots efforts — big and small — to protect the environment. Environmental stewardship in Langley is an issue which people are passionate about. Nominations have since expanded to honour environmental initiatives by individuals, businesses, organizations, and youth.
Due to the huge response, a nominee selection committee was formed, comprised of sponsor representatives with an interest in the environment. The 2012 nominees are so exceptional that the committee decided to add a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The organizing and nomination selection committee is comprised of Gerry Borden of the National Historic Site in Fort Langley, Times editor Frank Bucholtz, Times publisher Dwayne Weidendorf, Lina Azeez of the Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS), and Tanya Tait, Warawa’s executive assistant.
