The flight instructor who died with his student when their Cessna crashed at the north end of Harrison Lake on July 5 as been identified as Brett Loftus, 25, of Langley.
His passenger was 23-year-old student pilot Joel Nortman of Vancouver.
Nortman was taking a lesson in flying in mountainous terrain when the plane crashed at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The flight had originated at the Boundary Bay airport and was part of the Pacific Flying Club to which Loftus belonged.
At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, an RCMP helicopter left the Chilliwack Airport carrying members of the B.C. Coroners Service, Search and Rescue, and an RCMP officer from the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment. The Transportation Safety Board also flew to the crash site along with two members from Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team.
The bodies of the student and instructor were taken from the downed plane at 4:30 p.m. and taken to Chilliwack Airport for a preliminary examination by the coroner. They were then transported to the Royal Columbian Hospital.
Transportation Safety Board and the B.C. Coroners Service have taken over the investigation to determine what caused the crash and how the two men died.
The area of the wreckage is in amongst large boulders and thick brush and is only accessible by helicopter.
