His passenger was 23-year-old student pilot Joel Nortman of Vancouver.

Nortman was taking a lesson in flying in mountainous terrain when the plane crashed at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The flight had originated at the Boundary Bay airport and was part of the Pacific Flying Club to which Loftus belonged.

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, an RCMP helicopter left the Chilliwack Airport carrying members of the B.C.
