'Ugly' McDonald's may go back to drawing board

Council Agenda for Public Hearing
Langley Township council questions whether these plans for renovations of the Aldergrove McDonald's meet local design guidelines.

Does the proposed new look of the Aldergrove McDonald's fit in with Aldergrove Development Permit guidelines?

That may depend, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

McDonald's has applied for a development permit to renovate the exterior of its restaurant at 26360 Fraser Hwy.

In a report which Township council received on Jan. 31, planning technician Colin Moore said that Stantec Architecture Ltd.'s application, on behalf of McDonald's, complies with the industrial designation and development permit guidelines of the Aldergrove  Community Plan.

But when Councillor Kim Richter looked at the architect's renderings, she was not impressed.

"I don't know if it's my eyesight, but I think it's ugly," she said.

"It may work for McDonald's, but Aldergrove has to live it," she added.

"It does seem a little out of place," Mayor Rick Green commented.

Planning director Ramin Seifi said that the guidelines "are old and fairly broad-based," especially in terms of colour and materials for the exterior.

Council agreed with Richter that staff should discuss the design with stakeholders, including the Aldergrove Enhancement Committee.
