One person has died following a crash in Delta Wednesday morning (April 3).

At about 8:35 a.m., a Volkswagen left the roadway and collided with a large interchange lamppost on the northbound Highway 99 offramp just south of Highway 17.

“The vehicle caught on fire with the driver inside and, tragically, the driver has passed away,” RCMP Cpl. Melissa Jongema with BC Highway Patrol confirmed in an email to the Reporter.

“We do not have any details to release about the driver at this time or the cause of the collision at this time as it is still early in the investigation.”

Jongema said there were no other passengers in the vehicle.

The offramp remains closed as investigators process the scene.

Drivers are told to expect major delays while the investigation continues, and to check DriveBC (drivebc.ca, @drivebc) for updates.
