In Loving Memory ~
Marta Jeklin (née Geddert) aged 95, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 23, 2022 at home in Langley, BC.
Marta was born on March 12, 1927 in Pruden, Transylvania, Romania. Marta endured considerable hardships living through WW2 and an internment in a Russian labour camp, before immigrating to Vancouver in 1949 to join her older sister Katie. She married Andreas (Andy) Jeklin, a Swiss dairy farmer, in 1950 and together they created a happy, albeit hardworking, life on the farm. Her tireless work ethic continued well after her farming days were over. Even in her 90s she often lamented that she felt lazy because she hadn't "done any real work" lately!
Marta was known for her formidable strength of character and resilience, which she attributed to having come from "a long line of strong independent women". Kind- hearted and empathetic, she selflessly put the needs of her family and friends first. She was a sympathetic listener who always made time to dispense sensible advice (often with the reminder that "this too shall pass") while serving a hot (never lukewarm) cup of coffee and whatever delicious home baked goods she happened to have made.
Marta loved gardening, reading, card games, and especially crib - enjoying all well into her 90s. But most of all, Marta loved, and was especially proud of, her family. She was predeceased by her husband Andy, granddaughter Cara, and all five of her siblings.
Marta, or Oma to her family, is survived by her five children and their spouses, 12 grandchildren, 3 great granddaughters, and by a large extended family with many nieces and nephews in Canada and Europe. Marta will be loved and missed by all whose lives she touched.
In accordance with Marta's wishes there will be no Memorial service. Donations in Marta's memory may be made to the Red Cross for its Ukraine Emergency Appeal. (see: redcross.org.ua. for donation options.)
