Patrick Yoshiro Miki

In Loving Memory ~

Patrick, eldest child of Tamako and Masao Miki, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones.

Remaining to cherish memories of him are his wife Diane of 50 years, his three daughters Kathy, Laureen and Nancy (Adam), grandchildren Ryan (Eliza), Adam (Shanti), Marli and Lainey and great grandchildren Maeve, Caden and Owen. Patrick was predeceased by his sister Joan Miki and brother Henry Miki.

Pat was born in BC and grew up on a 50-acre, mixed-use farm located on the western edge of Matsqui, along the BC Electric Railway line. He attended school in Bradner, one mile east of home. The two-room school house had grades one to six with lessons taught by Mr. Stretch and Miss Cato.

Like many others of Japanese descent, Patrick and his family were forced to move during WW2. They relocated to Dufrost, Manitoba with six other Japanese families. His family of five plus two additional children shared a 500 square-foot farmhouse. He attended school and worked along side his family in the sugar beet fields.

After high school graduation, he went on to study at the University of Manitoba where, in 1955, he earned his medical degree. From 1944-1955 he enlisted in the Air Cadets where he received his glider license. As a medical officer, Lieutenant Commander, he completed several navy deployments along the west coast and to Hawaii.

This is likely how he cultivated his love of the sea. In 1959, Pat completed his radiology specialty at UBC, and later that year, joined Dr. Henry Brown in Chilliwack to start what is now known as Valley Medical Imaging. Pat practiced until his retirement in 2003. He was well-respected among colleagues and all those with whom he worked.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Pat enjoyed woodworking, gardening and his dogs! He took great interest in cars, technology and all things that were novel to him. He was an avid reader, especially non-fiction and biographies. Pat also enjoyed watching sports and attended many of his grandsons' games.

Pat's sense of curiosity led him to be interested in an endless array of topics and also in the interests of others. His main love and raison d'etre, however, was his family. Ever the epitome of the eldest Japanese son, his family was the primary focus throughout his life.

He was the exemplar of a loving patriarch, always putting the needs and wants of others above his own. This was in his very nature and is what leaves a profound impression on us all.

During his final days, our father repeatedly expressed his gratitude for the years of love, devotion and care he received from Diane.

He also wanted to extend his thanks to the caring doctors, nurses and staff of Langley Memorial Hospital and for the hospice care that made his final days comfortable and peaceful.

Memorial Service to be held at Valley View Funeral Home and Cemetery, (14644 72nd Avenue, Surrey, BC) on Sunday, October 1st from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, Patrick suggested people buy themselves a bouquet to enjoy. He was particularly fond of carnations.

If donations are preferred, Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation, Salvation Army, Nikkei Place Foundation, Langley Hospice Society were his preferred charities.
