For the first time in the history of B.C. Minor baseball an all-girls team, the Her-icanes, will be representing Aldergrove as one of the co-hosts of the Provincial Tournament.

The U-15 girls will be facing the other 11 all-boys teams for the title of B.C.'s Bantam A champions. Co-hosted by the Aldergrove Dodgers and the Her-icanes, the tournament takes place at Aldergrove Athletic Park, July 31 to August 4 (or August 5 in event of rained-out games).

Wayne Bampton, the general manager of the Aldergrove Peewee and Bantam girls teams, as well as the Okanagan Halos, says the girls baseball program has come a long way since it started five years ago.

The U-15 Her-icanes are also the B.C. Select team that is going to the National Championships in Halifax, August 22. The team's players are from Kelowna, Vancouver Island, Chilliwack and Abbotsford.

The Her-icanes are scheduled to play the Aldergrove Dodgers in the Bantam A Provincial Tournament here on Saturday, August 3 at 3 p.m.

The U-13 Her-icanes are Peewees and feature a pair of sisters from Aldergrove. They are the B.C. Select team which will be going to the Girls Western Championships in Redcliff, Alberta, August 8-12 (the original hosts, Medicine Hat had to cancel due to heavy rains).

Bampton says, "A couple of weeks ago the Blue Jays Academy came to Nat Bailey Stadium for Girls Day, one of four Canadian cities to have such an honour. Most of the Her-icanes were in attendance — the story behind this all-girls team in the Provincials is newsworthy - our U-13 team and the Okanagan team (Halos) are going to Alberta for the Girls Western Championships."
