Cup final success
Aldergrove United Soccer Club, in partnership with the Fraser Valley Soccer League and Metro Women’s Soccer League, hosted an action-packed weekend of Provincial Cup Finals at the Aldergrove Athletic Park Complex this past weekend. All eight matches proved to be exciting encounters, with Canadian Club Championship berths clinched by Surrey United Women (Premier Women) and ICTS Pegasus (Premier Men) who will now represent British Columbia in Quebec in October 2011. Roller derby women skate over cancer
Abbotsford’s own Reign Valley Vixens hit the floor rolling on May 28 with the second annual Battle for Boobs flat track roller derby bout. Once again they will be raising funds and awareness to fight the battle against breast cancer.
The Vixen Veterans will defend their home track in game one against Edmonton’s Oil City Tanker Girls, while the Vixens’ Smash Test Betties take on the Sunshine Coast Roller Girls in game two at Abbotsford’s MSA Arena.
The Facebook page Rolling Over Cancer has been established for both the skaters and the community to share their personal stories of why this cause means so much to them.
Remaining bouts for this season will be played at the MSA Arena in Abbotsford: June 25 Rollin’ Thunder and July 23 Wheels of Justice.
Tickets are $12 at the door, or $10 with a non-perishable food donation to the Abbotsford food bank. Children under 12 are free. See their website: www.rvvrd.com.
Relay for Life still looking for volunteers
Organizers of the annual Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life need the help of between 15 and 20 teams, and people who are willing to volunteer for the event which begins on Friday, May 27 and ends the following morning.
The event is at McLeod Athletic Park, 216 Street and 56 Avenue.
Langley has over 72 teams registered; the goal is for at least 95 teams to help fight back against cancer this year at Relay For Life.
“We’re already over $74,000 closer to our fundraising goal for 2011,” said Shannon Todd Booth, who organizes the event for the Langley unit of the CCS.

Chiefs are now the Rivermen
It’s official: the Langley Rivermen will hit the ice next season.
The B.C. Hockey League announced the sale of the junior A hockey Chiefs at the end of April. The new owners are John and Roy Henderson, and they take over from the Chiefs ownership group, which included Moray Keith, Heinz Hasselmen, Harvey Smyl and Jim Bond.
John Henderson, 65, is a chartered accountant, while Roy, 61, has a background in hockey scouting and is president of Global Sports Scouting Services Inc. “We have a hockey background and the reason we got involved is it’s another challenge in our lives,” he said.
“We really believe in the mission of the BCHL to send players on to the college level.”
Roy Henderson said they chose the name Rivermen because of the importance of the Fraser River to Langley.
